This spherical cactus is endemic to northern Chile and is up to 200 mm (7ľ in) in diameter with 11-17 ribs that have areoles with 5-10 radial spines and 0-3 central spines up to 50 mm (2 in) long.

Under cultivation it should be protected from excessive heat and sun and what sparingly during summer and not at all during winter. It is propagated by seeds and offsets.
