Variation
var.rubicunda
This shrub is similar to the species but has branches with reddish bark and the smaller ovate to lanceolate leaves are less than 50mm (2 in) long. The flowers have only a few florets, normally less than 5 and the shrub is naturally found at the mouth of Mokau River in the north island of New Zealand.
var. angustata
This shrub is similar to the species and has elliptical-oblong leaves with undulating margins and the flowers have very narrow ray florets and broad disk florets. The achenes are very silky pubescent.
