var.minor
This prostrate shrub grows to 400 mm ( 16 in) high and has tiny leaves. It produces bluish purple tube-shaped flowers in a dense raceme and the plant is naturally found in tussock grasslands or on the margins of water courses. It is suitable for small gardens or rockeries as a specimen and may be grown in patio pots as a spill-over.

var.rupestris
This shrub is similar to the species but is more spreading and produces large blue green leaves. The mauve flowers fade to white and appear during summer and the plant is naturally found growing amongst rocks.

Cultivar
'Quicksilver'
This small shrub has a compact rounded habit with silvery green foliage and produces mauve white flowers during early summer.
