Sub-species
subsp. suberba
This variation is taller growing to 2 m tall and wide producing a low mounted habit with thicker dark green foliage. It produces profuse pink red flowers in a raceme on a vertical stem above the foliage and are up to 50 mm (2 in) long from a winter to spring in an open sunny to semi-shaded position and prefers a well drained to damp sandy stony soil in a Mediterranean climate. It is naturally found north of Esperance growing in shrubland or mallee heath where it attracts honey eating birds.

Short-lobed form
This variation appears in the southern regions of the species near Esperance to Point Culver and initially is a prostrate shrub maturing to a dense low mounted habit. It has fine pinnatisect leaves with lobes up to 40 mm (1? in) long.
