Weed Potential
As a weedSmoke Weed is wide spread in Australia growing along the eastern coast from northern New South Wales to Victoria, South Australia and extending to Tasmania. It grows in a variety of native habitats including urban bushland and coastal or in disturbed or degraded land.
The plant requires an open sunny position for seed germination and seedlings dislike competition when establishing and are more prone to appear in open ground. The plant forms a mat across the ground and over low vegetation. The plant reproduces by seed which can remain viable in the soil for two years.
Control methodsinclude physically digging out small infestations including the roots and stems. Fruiting stems should be cut and bagged where possible then all plant material should be removed off site and destroyed.
Plants may be sprayed with a non-selective herbicide but follow up applications are required. Spraying is not the best method for controlling the weed.
