This large shrub to small tree grows to 4m (12ft) tall and has small dark green leaves and produces a large yellow papillionate flowers with a short standard within 8 years. They are arranged in a raceme and tend to hang upside down and appear during spring.

This plant is not commonly cultivated and may be difficult to obtain requiring a specialist nursery.
var.longicarinata
This slender small tree grows to 4m (12ft) tall with a graceful habit and produces very small leaflets. It has slightly larger papillionate flowers with erect standards that appear within 7 years. It is suitable for small gardens and grows in coastal or low-mountain regions.
Cultivars
'Chevalier'
This tree is similar to the species and produces masses of bright yellow flowers and has finer foliage.
'Dragon's Gold'
This dwarf cultivar varies in height from 1m (3ft) to 4m (12ft) tall and generally forms a prostrate habit. It is naturally found on Stephens Island where it grows on cliffs and in rocky places. When planting out allow for its mature height.
'Early Gold'
This evergreen semi dwarf shrub forms a compact rounded habit. The bright yellow flowers appear from early spring to early summer and appear sparsely over the plant.

This shrub to small tree has graceful pendulous branches and produces golden yellow papillionate flowers during spring.
