Weed Potential
As a weedQuaking Grass is aggressive fast growing species that can flower and seed quickly from spring to early summer and found throughout Australia.
It produces copious amounts of viable seed that germinate the following season or remain dormant in the soil for several years. It grows in full sun to semi shade tolerating most soils and positions and is commonly found in native grasslands and grassy woodlands or in disturbed soils that have an annual rainfall of over 700 mm (26 in) per year.
Infestations impede the growth of low growing native plants or the regeneration of larger species. The small viable seeds are dispersed by water, wind or animals and by garden waste or by rhizomes.
Control methodsinclude physically digging the shallow rhizomes and bagging seed heads and removing both off site. The plants may also be cut to ground level, to restrict the flowering period or burnt during the early part of the flowering period. The plant may also be sprayed with a non-selective herbicide that will require a follow up in four to six weeks.
