Sub-species
subsp. reevesiana
This larger hermaphrodite shrub grows to 7m (22 ft) tall by 1 m (3 ft) wide and has dark green narrow elliptical leaves and produces ovoid fruit. It is naturally found in China and Taiwan growing on the coast and in the mountains.
Cultivars
'Bowles Dwarf'
This dwarf shrub grows to 150 mm (6 in) tall by 450 mm (18 in) wide and forms a compact habit. It has bright red flower buds and male and female forms are available.
'Bronze Knight'
This shrub grows to 1.5m (5 ft) tall by 2 m (6 ft) wide and is a male clone with glossy dark green pointed leaves. It has an erect to creeping habit and produces fragrant white flowers in a panicle from mid to late spring and is similar to the cultivar 'Rebella'. It prefers a semi shaded protected position and grows in well drained moist soil with a pH ranged of 4.5 to 6.5 and grows in USDA zones 7-9.
'Foremanii'syn.'Veitchii'
This vigorous female shrub grows to 1.5m (5 ft) tall by 1.5m (5 ft) and forms a bushy habit. It has large glossy green broad-obovate leaves and has white flowers that appear from early to mid spring and are followed by brilliant red fruit. It grows in a open to protected semi shaded position in well drained moderately fertile moist soil including chalky soils and is pH adaptable.

This female shrub grows to 1m (3 ft) tall by 2 m (6 ft) wide with dark green foliage and produces fragrant white flowers that are followed by large clusters of brilliant red fruit. It requires a male plant in order to set seed. It prefers a semi shaded protected position and grows in well drained moist soil with a pH ranged of 4.5 to 6.5 and grows in USDA zones 7-9.
'Rubella'
This compact male shrub grows to 1m (3 ft) tall by 2 m (6 ft) wide with glossy dark green leaves that have a reddish margin and petiole. It produces large panicles up to 76 mm (3 in) wide of deep glossy bright red buds that persist throughout winter and are followed in spring by very fragrant white stellate flowers that have yellow anthers. The female form has small rounded red fruit and the plant prefers a semi shaded protected position. It grows in USDA zones 7-9.
'Ruby Dome'
This compact male shrub grows to 1m (3 ft) tall by 1.5 m (5 ft) wide with dark green leaves that are tinged in red along the margins. It produces rich red flower buds in autumn that persist until spring and than open to clusters of fragrant white flowers.
'Wakehurst White''Fructo-albo'
This small multi stemmed female shrub grows to 750 mm (30 in) tall and wide and produces masses of white fruit. It requires a male plant in order to set seed.
