There are two distinct forms. Plants that grow in scrubland attain a height of 1.2m (4ft) tall and appear as a stunted bush and the other form appears in forests where it grows to 9m (28ft) tall.
Under cultivation the growth traits remain the same as in the wild and the stunted plants are suitable for small gardens.

'Blue Haze'
This shrub produces bluish coloured foliage and is not commonly available.

'Cockaynes Blue'
This slow growing shrub produces blue-green foliage and was discovered in the South Island.

'Minimus'
This alpine dwarf form attains a height of 1m (3ft) tall and is suitable for rockeries or small gardens.
