This succulent has greyish green to reddish brown upright flat leathery truncate leaves that are up to 76 mm (3 in) tall and are cylindrical in cross section. The new leaves emerge from the centre of the cluster and the lack the about a white tubercles that are seen on the species. From late spring to early summer it produces tiny white tubular flowers in a raceme that is held high above the foliage. It is suitable for USDA zones 9-10.

var. minor
this dwarf succulent is a much smaller than the species and forms a rosette up to 40 mm (1? in) in diameter. It has a small dark truncate leaves that are arranged in rows and the leaf tips are usually spinescent (with small hairs). It is found growing in the Western Cape amongst rocks in a semi-shade position and is suitable for USDA zones 9-10.
