var. laevis
This is the commonly grown form rather than the species and has slight longer leaves and larger red fruit, up to 12mm (½in).
var. sinica
This plant from central and western China grows to 8m (25ft) tall and produces oval shaped orange-red fruit up to 12mm (½in) long. The leaves are simular to the species and the flowers are arranged in racemes.
