Sub-species
There are up to 5 sub-species recognised and are found from Queensland to Victoria.
subsp. rubiginosais found on sandstone based soils and has shorter channelled leaves that are up to 300mm (1ft) long
subsp. pallidais found from Queensland to Sydney growing on well drained sandy soils and has whitish shreds towards the base of the leaves.
Cultivar
'Little Pal' syn.'Little Con'
This grass-like perennial is a subsp. pallidacultivar growing to 300mm (1ft) tall and has pail-green to yellowish leaves. It is commonly found in New Zealand and is planted along garden borders.
'Silver Grace'
This grass-like perennial grows to 500mm (20in) tall by 400mm (16in) wide with weeping silver-grey foliage and produces plumes of fragrant yellow flowers during summer. It grows in an open sunny position on most well drained moderately fertile soils and tolerates hot dry conditions and temperatures down to -3ºc. It is planted along borders or mass planted on embankments as a ground cover.
It is commonly used in small gardens for colour contrast on the coast and inland, attracting birds and requires little maintenance once established. Plant out with a spacing of 300mm (1ft) apart.
'Wingarra'(R)
This grass-like perennial grows to 300mm (1ft) tall and wide with very fine textured dark green leaves that retain there colour during winter. It is planted in borders or mass planted as a ground cover and is suitable to pot culture.
It is drought and frost tolerant and once established it has a low water requirement (Scale: 1-drop from 3), responding to mulch and an occasional deep watering during dry periods, particularly for young plants.
