Supersweetvarieties
There are two forms of the Supersweet, Standard and the Sugary Extender. There are numerous varieties with different attributes and generally they dominate the fresh market in Australia. Please contact your local seed merchant to select the correct variety for your region.
Below are a few of the common varieties that are grown.
'Kandy Corn'
This vigorous annual vegetable grows to 3 m (10 ft) tall, maturing in 90 days and produces sweet tasting tender yellow kernels. It is commonly cultivated in domestic gardens and prefers a wind protected sunny position with well-drained garden loam with a pH range from 6.6 to 7.5.
'Peaches and Cream'
This variety grows to 1.8 m (6 ft) tall, maturing in 90 days and produces moderately sweet tasting yellow or white kernels. It is commonly cultivated in domestic gardens and is easily grow with 450 mm (18 in) spacing. It prefers a wind protected sunny position and tolerates most well-drained garden loam with a pH range from 6.0 to 7.5.
'Silver Queen'
This vigorous annual vegetable grows to 3 m (10 ft) tall, maturing in 100 days and produces moderately sweet tasting tender white and kernels. It is commonly cultivated in domestic gardens and is easily grow with 300 mm (1 ft) spacing and is resistant pests and diseases. It prefers a wind protected sunny position and tolerates most well-drained garden loam with a pH range from 6.6 to 7.5.
'Strawberry'
This popcorn variety grows to 2.4 m (8 ft) tall, maturing in 100 days and produces red-orange kernels. It is grown as a curiosity plant in vegetable gardens and is easy to cultivate with 600 mm (2 ft) spacing. It is ideal for a small garden and is excellent for popping. It prefers a wind protected sunny position and tolerates most well-drained garden loam with a pH range from 5.6 to 7.5.
