This smaller tree from south eastern North America reaches 8m (25ft) when mature with a rounded crown and produces pale yellow to greenish flowers.

This small deciduous tree has distinctive upright branching to 10 m (30ft) tall forming a open conical habit with mid green foliage.

From late winter to early spring it produces large fragrant primrose-yellow cup-shaped flowers that fade to cream, appearing before or with the foliage. This was the first yellow flowering magnolia produced maturing in 10 to 20 years and prefers an open sunny position on moist humus rich soils in growing in zones 5-8.

This tree is the same as the species but produces yellow flowers.
