var. pumilio     Mountain Pine
This dwarf shrub is upright or prostrate and may attain a height of 2m (6ft) with erect branches. The foliage is mid green and the plant is found in the alps of central Europe. It is planted in temperate gardens as a specimen or along low borders.

Cultivar
'Aurea'
This coniferous dwarf shrub grows to 1 m (3 ft) tall and wide forming a compact rounded habit. It has medium green foliage during summer which turns golden yellow during winter. It is very slow growing, tolerating zone 2-7 and is planted in small garden borders or rockeries.

'Gnom'
This compact cultivar has whitish shoots with black-green mature foliage and grows to 1.8m (6ft) tall.

'Humpy'
This slow growing coniferous shrub grows to 1 m (3ft) tall and wide with short dark green needles forming at compact rounded habit. Under cultivation it grows 300 mm (1ft) in 10 years and the photographs in the gallery were taken at Wisley Gardens UK.

'Mops'
This coniferous shrub forms a spherical habit to 1.5m (5ft) and is slow growing.
