Cultivars
'Krakatau'
This plant is more vigorous than the species and produces abundant orange-red tube-shaped flowers from spring to autumn. It prefers a semi shaded to shaded humid position with protection from frost and cold winds.
It grows in a gritty well drained moderately fertile moist soil and has a high water requirement once established. (Scale: 3-drops from 3) It is excellent for hanging baskets and may be grown indoors.
'Purpurea'
This sub-shrub has long pendulous stems up to 1m (3ft) long with velvety burgundy coloured leaves. It produces tubular red flowers with a yellow throat from spring to autumn appearing along the stems.
It prefers a warm humid position with bright indirect light and grows on well drained fertile moist but not wet soils.
It is normally grown in a hanging basket but can also form a spill over along a retaining wall. It has a high water requirement once established. (Scale: 3-drops from 3)
