Cultivar
'Variegata'
This plant has glossy green leaves that are irregularly striped creamy white. It is grown in hang baskets or used as a ground cover.
Weed Potential
As a weedWandering Jew is invasive in moist shaded positions and infests coastal woodlands or forests and along water courses. The creeper has a fast growth rate forming soft stems that root at the nodes and creates a dense covering over low growing vegetation.
The plant grows in full sun but spreads quickly in very shaded positions. It grows on moist well to poorly drained soil and when mature it tolerates dry periods. Seed is not produced in Australia and the plants stolons are dispersed in garden waste or by water and in soil.
Control methodsinclude physically digging out small infestations or raking or rolling the plant up in mass, checking that all broken fragments or the stems are collected. All plant material should be removed off site and destroyed.
The plant can be covered with black plastic sheeting for 3-6 weeks until it dies. The plant may also be sprayed with a non-selective herbicide aided with a surfactant to penetrate the waxy leaf surface from spring to autumn. A follow up spray will be required.
