Weed Potential
As a weedBalloon Vine is wide spread in eastern Australia and is highly invasive growing in a variety of native habitats including woodlands, moist forests and along water courses. Growth occurs during the warmer months and the plant smothers the ground and climbs into the lower canopy cutting out the light for the host.

The vine matures in one season and prefers a open sunny position with moist soils. It can tolerate temporary inundation or water logged soils commonly found along river banks. Thousands of seeds are produced annually and are viable for up to 18 months and are the main form of reproduction. They are dispersed by floating along water courses or by wind.

Control methodsinclude physically digging out small infestations including the tap root. Larger plants may have the tap root dug up and the foliage left in the canopy of the host plant to dry out if the stems have no seeds.

Fruiting stems should be cut and bagged where possible then all plant material should be removed off site and destroyed. Plants may also be sprayed with a non-selective herbicide taking care not to spray the native vegetation. Follow up applications are required as seedlings germinate readily.
