Weed Potential
As a weedPrickly Pear is invasive in drier regions with low rainfall and form large stands that inhibiting the development of native tree or shrub seedlings and preventing ground flora from growing. There are up to 10 species that are regarded as weeds and although slow to establish they are long lived with some species producing very viable seeds.

Other species spread vegetatively taking root when spiny segments touch the ground. Detached segments can remain alive for up to 2-years before developing roots and the plants grow in most well drained moderately fertile drier soils and are very tolerant hot dry conditions.

The seeds are dispersed by birds or water and vegetative segments are dispersed in soil or garden waste.

Controlmethods include physically digging out seedlings and small plants. Larger plants can be knocked over with machinery or cut down checking that all the parts are removed and destroyed. Plants or seedlings may be sprayed with a selective herbicide during spring while the plant is actively growing but follow up spraying will be required over the next 12-months.
