Weed Potential
As a weedPrivet is highly invasive in warm temperate to sub tropical regions predominantly along the coast and inland infesting habitats that include, rainforest, woodlands or moist-gullies and along water courses. It also occurs in disturbed soils and neglected land.
They form dense stands inhibiting the development of native tree or shrub seedlings and preventing ground flora from growing. They grows in well drained sandy / stony or heavier clay soils with shallow roots that quickly feed off surface moisture and nutrients, enabling rapid growth.
They prefer an open sunny position for maximum seed production but will tolerate shade during the juvenile stage. Large clusters of fruit mature in winter and are viable for 2-years.
Many seeds germinate and seedlings remain small for a few years until the canopy opens providing more light, then the seedlings rapidly grow. They are dispersed by birds or water and in soil or garden waste and small Leaf Privet suckers forming a dense clump.
Controlmethods include physically digging out seedlings and small plants checking that all the roots are removed. Fruiting branches should be bagged and removed off site then destroyed. Large plants can be cut or drilled and painted / injected with a non-selective herbicide preferably at the base.
Additional applications may be required if the plant suckers. Young plants or seedlings may be sprayed with a non-selective herbicide during spring while the plant is actively growing. Follow up spraying will be required to eradicate accumulated seeds in the soil.
