Weed Potential
As a weedFreesias are widely cultivated as an ornamental in parks and gardens and can form pockets that infest woodlands around populated areas. The foliage appears during winter followed by flowers and seeds in spring. It grows in full sun to semi shade preferring moist fertile soils. Large clumps inhibit the regrowth of low growing indigenous flora. It is dispersed by corms, bulbils and seed that are spread by wind, water or in garden waste.
Controlmethods include physically digging the plants out in moist friable soil taking care not disturb the corms and bulbils. They should be bagged and removing them off site. The plants may also be sprayed or wick-wiped with a non-selective herbicide before the flower stems develop.
