Weed Potential
As a weedMirror Bush is invasive in coastal regions of New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia invading habitats including dunes or coastal woodlands and forests inhibiting the development of native tree or shrub seedlings.
The shrub can grow in a variety of poorly to well drained soils in sunny to shaded exposed or protected position. It is tolerant of salt laden winds and hot dry periods once established and the female plant produces many viable seeds. The seeds are dispersed by birds and in garden waste or in soil.
Controlmethods include physically digging out seedlings checking that all the roots are removed. Shrubs with fruiting branches should be bagged and removed off site. They may also have the trunk scraped or drilled, then paint with a non-selective herbicide.
Small plant or seedlings may also be sprayed with a non-selective herbicide with the addition of a surfactant added to help penetrate the waxy leaf surface though this is not commonly implemented. A follow up spray will be required over the next 2 years and a rehabilitation program will need to be implemented in fragile sites such as dunes to avoid erosion.
