There are hundreds of cultivars and it is advised to contact your local nursery for available varieties.
'Addy Wery'
Single flowers that are deep orange red, winter foliage is bronze and grows to 1.5m.
'Christmas Cheer' syn. ('Ima Shojo')
Hose-in-hose flowers which are vivid clear red smothering the 1-1.8m plant. The leaves are bright green.
'Fairy Queen' syn. ('Aioi')
Hose-in-hose flowers in pink with a red blotch to 1 X 1.2m (compact shrub).
'Hatsu Giri'
Single flowers in vivid purplish colour forming an upright twiggy bush to 1.2m.
'Hino Crimson'
Single flower in bright pinkish red covering the 1.5m plant. This is a tough plant with good winter foliage colour.
'Hinode-giri'
Small single flowers in cerise. The plant has dense foliage to 1.5m.
'Hinomayo' syn. ('Hinomoyo')
Single flowers in purple-pink. This shrub is strong growing and upright to 1.8m.
'Iroha Yama' syn.('Dainty')
Small single flowers in white with apricot-pink edges. It is a compact shrub to 1.2m.
'Kirin' syn.('Coral Bells')
Hose-in-hose flowers in soft paste pink. Very popular Azalea, a dense shrub with bright-green foliage that turns bronze during winter, to 1.8m.
'Kiritsubo' syn. ('Twilight')
Single flowers in bright purple. It is an upright shrub to 1.8m.
'Mothers Day' syn.('Muttertag')
Hose-in-hose to double flowers in cerise. This is a dense compact shrub to 1.2m.
'Osaraku' syn.('Penelope')
Single flowers in white suffused with light purple. It is a dense and twiggy shrub to 1.5m.
"Red Robin' syn.('Waka Kayede')
Single flowers in bright orange-red. It is a low spreading shrub 1 X 1.5m.
'Sui Yohi' syn.('Sprite')
Single flower in white flushed with pale pink and pink petal tips. Upright to 1.8m and is frost tender.
'Venus'
Kumon Indica crosses. Single flowers that are reddish. Upright to 1.8m
'Wards Ruby'
Small single flowers in deep red. It is an upright twiggy shrub to 1.5m and is frost tender.
'Amoena'
Small hose-in-hose flowers in purple covering plant. This very tough shrub grows to 2.4m (hedging plant).
'Princess Maude'
Single flowers in deep pink. It is upright and twiggy to 2.4m (light prune when young).
'Hexe'
Hose-in-hose flowers in bright, carmine-crimson.
Ericaceae
This family consists mainly of shrubs with conspicuous flowers.
Distribution
These plants are found worldwide and normally appear intemperateclimates.
Diagnostic Features
The leaveshave a leathery texture and normally an entire margin. They are arranged alternate, opposite or whorled and are inserted singly and have no stipules.
The regular bisexual flowersare arranged solitary, panicles and may be terminal or axillary. They`re four to fivepetalsthat may be fused and four to five fused petals; these may be large with bright colours. There is double the number ofstamensas petals and the anthers open with slits or pores.
The superior or inferior ovaryis four locular with several ovules at the central placentas axil and the nectar occurs at the base or top of the ovary.
Thefruitmay be a berry or capsule that is covered in a fleshy calyx and the rounded seeds are hard coated.
Note
There are many notable horticulture plants in this family and all normally need acid soil to grow well. All parts of these plants are harmful to parrots, cockatoos and Senegal parrots if eaten.
