Cultivars
'Ballerina'
This small shrub grows to 600 mm (2 ft) tall and wide forming a compact bushy habit. It is suitable for small gardens on the coast or inland and may be planted in patio pots or planter boxes.
'Majestic Beauty'
This large shrub grows to 5 m (15 ft) tall forming a dense bushy habit with dark green foliage. It is planted along borders for screening and may be trim to form a hedge. It grows in an open sunny to semi shaded position, and tolerates most well drained moderately fertile moist soils.
'Oriental Pearl'
This low growing compact, evergreen shrub and grows to 1 m (3 ft) tall and wide. It forms a dense habit with a dark glossy green leaves and produces white flowers with a pink stamens that appear in dense clusters from autumn to late spring.
It grows in an open sunny to semi shaded position and is resistant to salt spray, making it ideal for coastal regions. It is also planted around salt water swimming pools and may be used in containers. This shrub responds to pruning and may be trimmed to form an informal hedge.
'Springtime'
This low growing shrub produces fragrant white flowers and is planted in small or cottage gardens.
Weed Potential
As a weedIndian Hawthorn is wide spread in coastal regions of south-eastern Australia and is invasive growing in a variety of native habitats including woodlands, forests and along water courses.
Growth is slow at first but once established the plant smothers the ground cutting out the light for germinate in native seedlings. The shrub is long lived and can grow in open sunny to semi shaded positions tolerating most soil types. Mature plants produce very viable seeds that are dispersed by water or by animals and in garden waste or soil.
Control methodsinclude physically digging out small infestations including the roots or it may be severed at the base and re-shoot. Fruiting stems should be cut and bagged where possible then all plant material should be removed off site and destroyed.
Spraying plants with a non-selective herbicide may be ineffective as the leaf has a very waxy surface inhibiting penetration. Follow up applications are required on mature plants.
