'Grandiflora'

This shrub produces large rich purple coloured flowers up to 30mm (1in) long and grows in an open sunny position. It is suitable for coastal regions and has a low water requirement once established (Scale: 1-drop from 3), responding to mulch and an occasional deep watering during dry periods.

Weed Potential
As a weedMyrtle-Leaf Milkwort is highly invasive and infests coastal regions including dunes, coastal bluffs, scrubland and adjoining woodlands. In Australia major infestations occur from Victoria to South Australia.

It forms dense thickets that inhibiting the development of native tree or shrub seedlings and preventing ground flora from growing. It is fast growing from winter to spring tolerating exposed positions, salt-laden winds and hot dry periods in a shaded to sunny position.

The fruiting period is from spring to summer and the very viable seed can remain dormant for up to 3-years, germinating in shaded or sunny positions. The seeds are dispersed by birds, ants or water and in soil or garden waste.

Controlmethods include physically digging out seedlings and small plants. Fruiting branches should be bagged and destroyed and plants can be cut off at ground level as they normally do not re-shoot.

Plants or seedlings may be sprayed with a non-selective herbicide during spring while the plant is actively growing but follow up spraying will be required over the next 3-years.
