Cultivars
Dutch cultivars
These cultivars are stopped from producing flowers for the first two years so extra energy can be converted back to the bulb. The larger bulbs then produce a single flower stem with larger flowers that are more closely packed together giving a better display.
These large florist type hyacinths have a large colour range that includes white, cream, pink, salmon, red, mauve, blue and lavender. The flowers appear from mid-winter to mid-spring and a sweetly fragrant. If the bulbs are allowed to flower every year. The flowers will become smaller and less compact.
Roman/ Cynthella cultivars
These plants produce several flower stems per bulb and are similar to the wild hyacinths.
The flowers are not so closely packed and the colour range is from white, pink and white blue. They flower from mid winter to early spring and are more tolerant of warm temperate areas.
