Cultivars
There are many cultivars available below and a selection of images are available in the gallery. Many of the photographs in the gallery were taken at Kyoto Botanic Gardens, Japan and please contact your local nursery for current available varieties.
Thereare divided into 15 divisions which are listed below.
'Akane'
This Darwin hybrid grows to 450mm (18 in) tall with glaucous green foliage and during late spring it produces blood red double flowers high above the foliage. When in bud the sepals appear as thorns and the plant grows in Zones 3-8
'Albino'
This bulbous plant has dark leathery foliage and during spring it produces pure white goblet shaped flowers that are held above the foliage on a slender scape up to 600 mm (2ft) tall. It grows in the Zones 4-8 in a sunny wind protected position in the soil with a pH of 5.5-8.
'Angelique'
This Double late tulip grows to 450 mm (18in) tall with dark green foliage and during late spring it produces double bowl-shaped white flowers that are suffused candy pink. They appeared just above the foliage on a stout medium stem and grow in zones 3-8.
'Asuka'
This Single late tulip grows to 600 mm (2ft) tall with mid green foliage. During late spring produces red cup-shaped flowers that are suffused in white particularly along the margins. This plant grows in Zones 3-8.
'Ben van Zanten'
This Triumph tulip has grows to 600 mm (24in) tall with dark green foliage and during mid spring it produces deep shiny red flowers that are yellowish at the base. They are held above the foliage on a slender stem requiring a wind protected position. It grows in Zones 3-8 and is an excellent cut flower.
'Benijishi'
This Double late tulip grows to 500 mm (20in) tall with dark green foliage and during late spring it produces double bowl-shaped red flowers that are suffused in bright yellow from the base. They appeared just above the foliage on a stout medium stem and grow in zones 3-8.
'Beniyutaka'
This Single late tulip grows to 600 mm (2ft) tall with mid green foliage. During late spring produces velvet red cup-shaped flowers above the foliage on a sturdy long stem and it grows in Zones 3-8.
'Big Smile'
This Single late tulip grows to 650 mm (26in) tall with mid green foliage. During late spring produces bright yellow cup-shaped flowers above the foliage on a sturdy long stem. It is commonly cultivated and used in pots or beds and it grows in Zones 3-8
'Black Hero'
This Penelope tulip grows to 400 mm (16in) tall with blue green foliage and in late spring it produces fully double bowl-shaped velvet-purple, black flowers that are held above the foliage on a slender stem. It grows in zones 4-8 with long-lasting flowers and tolerates rough weather.
'Black Parrot'
This Parrot tulip grows to 500 mm (20in) tall with grey-green foliage and during late spring it produces blackish-purple cup-shaped flowers with the irregularly fringed wavy petals. They are held above the foliage on a slender stem and the plants should be closely spaced to prevent the flowers from flopping over. It prefers a wind protected sunny position and grows in zones 3-8.
'Blue Diamond'
This Penelope tulip grows to 400 mm (16in) tall with blue green foliage and in late spring it produces bowl-shaped deep violet purple double flowers with many petals held above the foliage on a sturdy medium-sized stem. The bulbs are at 120 mm (4µin)in diameter and the plant grows in zones 3-8.
'Blushing Lady'
This Lily flowered tulip grows to 750 mm (30in) tall with dark green foliage and during late spring it produces pale yellow and rose coloured flowers with orange highlights high above the foliage on a long stems. The bulbs are 120 mm (4µin) in diameter and the plant grows in zones 3-7.
'Canasta'
This Fringed tulip has leathery dark green foliage and grows up to 500 mm (20in) tall and produces blended red flowers with white fringe margins during late spring. They are held amongst the foliage on a steady stem and the very showy long-lasting blooms are used in floral arrangements. It is planted as a focal point in a garden and grows in Zones 3-8.
'Carnaval de Rio'
This Triumph tulip has dark green leathery foliage with white margins and produces flashy single white with red-streaked goblet shaped flowers during late spring. They appear above the foliage on a stem up to 450mm (18 in) tall and are suitable for growing in Zones 3-8.
'Claudia'
This Lily-flowered tulip has glaucous green foliage and during mid spring it produces single purplish-white flowers above the foliage on a middle stem up to 600 mm (2ft) tall. It is ideal as a bedding plant and grows in Zones 3-7.
'Come-Back'
This Darwin hybrid grows to 450mm (18 in) tall with glaucous green foliage and during mid spring it produces blood red single flowers high above the foliage. It prefers an open sunny wind protected position and it grows in Zones 3-8.
'Flaming Parrot' syn. 'Red Parrot', 'Red Radiance'
This Parrot tulip grows to 600 mm (2ft) tall with dark green foliage and during late spring it produces pale yellow irregularly fringed wavy petals with flaming red stripes. The flowers are held above the foliage on a medium sturdy stem. It is an excellent cut flower and grows in zones 3-9.
'Gander'
This Triumph tulip grows to 450mm (18 in) tall with dark green foliage and from late spring it produces single bright magenta cup-shaped flowers that appear above the foliage on a sturdy long stem. It grows in Zones 4-8 and is suitable as a cut flower.
'Gander's Rhapsody'
This Triumph tulip grows to 450mm (18 in) tall with dark green foliage and from late spring it produces single white flowers that are suffused in bright pink appearing above the foliage on a sturdy long stem. It grows in Zones 4-8 and is suitable as a cut flower.
'Gerrit van der Valk'
This Triumph tulip grows to 500 mm (20in) tall with blue-green foliage and during late spring it produces large single red flowers that are suffused in yellow along the margins and appear above the foliage on a normal sturdy stem. It grows in Zones 4-8 and is commonly used as a cut flower.
'Ginpai'
This Single late tulip grows to 450mm (18 in) tall with dark green foliage. During late spring produces cup-shaped white-yellow flowers that are held above the foliage on a sturdy long stem. This plant grows in Zones 3-8.
'Golden Empire State'
This Darwin hybrid grows to 600 mm (2ft) with dark green foliage. From mid to late spring it produces deep yellow flowers that are held high above the foliage on a slender stem. It is a commonly grow for the cut flower market and grows in Zones 3-8.
'Golden Melody'
This Triumph or Single Late tulip has wavy dark green foliage and produces fragrant buttercup-yellow, long-lasting single flowers just above the foliage on a sturdy stem. It grows in Zones 4-8 and is suitable for massed planting.
'Greenland'
This Viridiflora tulip grows 450mm (18in) tall with mid green foliage and during late spring it produces green cup-shaped flowers with broad pink margins. The flowers are held above the foliage on a long sturdy stem and the plant grows in Zones 3-8.
'Hamilton'
This Fringed tulip grows to 400mm (16 in) with dark green foliage and during late spring it produces buttercup yellow flowers with fringe margins. They are held just above the foliage on a long stem and the very showy long-lasting blooms are used in floral arrangements. It grows in Zones 3-9 and the bulbs are up to 120mm ((4µin) in diameter.
'Haruotome'
This Triumph tulip grows to 600 mm (2ft) tall with mid-green foliage and from mid to late spring it produces whitish buds that are suffused in purple and the single flower opens to a deep purplish-pink. It grows in Zones 4-8 and is suitable for containers or as a cut flower.
'Hatsusakura'
This Darwin hybrid grows to 600mm (24 in) tall and from mid to late spring it produces white flowers with a hot pink margins and tips appearing just above the foliage on a sturdy stem. It is an ideal plant for colour contrast in a girly garden and is suitable for zones 3-7
'Huis Ten Bosch'
This Fringed tulip grows to 600mm (24 in) tall with dark green foliage and during mid to late spring it produces white cup-shaped flowers with pink fringe margins. They are held just above the foliage on a normal stem and it grows in Zones 3-8.
'Ile de France'
This Triumph tulip has mid green foliage and grows to 600 mm (2ft) tall. During late spring it produces single velvet red flowers appearing high above the foliage on a slender stem. It is ideal as a bedding plant or for cut flowers and is suitable for Zones 3-7, prefers a wind protected position.
'Insurpassable'
This Single late tulip grows to 500 mm (20in) tall with dark green foliage. During late spring produces cup-shaped flowers that are varied in shades of rose-pink above the foliage on a sturdy stem. It grows in Zones 3-8.
'Judith Leyster'
This Triumph tulip grows to 600 mm (2ft) tall and produces pale red flowers that a striped with white lines from the base. It is suitable for Zones 3-7 and prefers at wind protected position.
'Koiakane'
This Triumph tulip has light green foliage and grows to 600 mm (2ft) tall. During mid spring it produces single red flowers that are suffused in the yellow particularly along the margins appearing high above the foliage on a slender stem. It is ideal as a bedding plant or for cut flowers. It is suitable for Zones 3-7 and prefers a wind protected position.
'Lalibela'
This Darwin hybrid grows to 600mm (24 in) tall with glaucous green foliage. From mid to late spring it produces long stemmed deep red flowers that are yellow brown at the base and appearing above the foliage. It is suitable for zones 3-7 and is used in mass plantings for colour contrast.
'Lambada'
This Fringed tulip has leathery mid-green foliage and grows up to 500 mm (20in) tall and produces salmon-rose flowers with golden yellow fringe margins during late spring. They are held above the foliage of a steady stem and the very showy blooms are used in floral arrangements. It is planted as a focal point in a garden and grows in Zones 3-8.
'Leen Van der Mark'
This Triumph tulip grows to 600 mm (2ft) tall with dark green foliage and during mid spring it produces single vibrant red flowers with suffused white margins above the foliage on a sturdy stem. It is suitable for Zones 3-7 and prefers at wind protected position.
'Magier'
This Single late tulip grows to 450mm (18 in) tall with dark green foliage. During late spring produces cup-shaped flowers that are milky-white with dark purplish margins. The showy flowers become pale mauve as they mature and are held above the foliage on a sturdy long stem. This plant grows in Zones 3-8.
'Menton'
This Single late tulip grows to 600 mm (2ft) tall with dark green foliage. During late spring produces cup-shaped flowers in varying shades of rose-pink with apricot-pink margins. They appear above the foliage on a sturdy stem and grow in Zones 3-8.
'Mistress'
This Triumph tulip grows to 500 mm (20in) tall with dark green foliage and during mid spring it produces single bright to pale pink flowers above the foliage, on a sturdy stem. The flowers are long lasting and the plant is suitable for Zones 3-7.
'Momotaro'
This Darwin hybrid grows to 600mm (24 in) tall with blue green foliage and from mid to late spring it produces single pink to white cup-shape flowers above the foliage on a sturdy stem. It is ideal for containers and grows in zones 3-8.
'Murasakisuishou'
This Single late tulip grows to 500 mm (20in) tall with bluish-green foliage. During late spring it produces large cup-shaped purple flower above the foliage on a sturdy medium stem. It grows in zones 4-8.
'Negrita'
This Triumph tulip grows to 600 mm (24in) tall and during mid to late spring it produces plum purple single flowers that have splashes of yellow, white and blue on the inside. There are held high above the mid-green foliage on a slender stem and are ideal for cutting or massed planting. It is suitable for Zones 3-7 and prefers at wind protected position.
'Olympic Gold' syn. 'Lefeber's Favourite'
This perennial has an upright habit with dark green foliage and during mid spring it produces golden-yellow goblet shaped flowers that have reddish veins on the inside. They are held high above the foliage on a slender stem to 700 mm (28in) tall and are ideal as a cut flower.
'Orange Bouquet' syn.'Orange Village'
This Triumph tulip grows to 600 mm (24in) tall with pale green foliage. From mid to late spring it produces orange-red single flowers that have a yellow base. It may also produce multiple flowers per plant on a sturdy stem. It is suitable for Zones 5-8 and prefers at wind protected position.
'Paul Scherer'
This Single late tulip grows to 500 mm (20in) tall with mid-green foliage. During late spring it produces oval deep red-black flowers above the foliage on a sturdy stem. It is planted in drifts at 200 mm (7µin) deep by 150 mm (6in) apart and grows in the zone 4-8.
'Pays Bas'
This Triumph tulip grows to 500 mm (20in) tall with mid-green foliage. During the spring it produces large pure white flowers with a creamy centre above the foliage on a sturdy stem. It is suitable for Zones 3-8 and for in a dramatic effect bulbs should be planted in groups of 25 to 50.
'Perestroyka'
This Single late tulip grows to 750 mm (30in) tall with dark green foliage. During spring it produces single cup shaped reddish salmon flowers with coral coloured margins. The long stems hold the flowers well above the foliage and plant grows in zones 3-7.
'Pink Diamond'
This Single late tulip grows to 600mm (24in) tall with light green foliage and during late spring it produces oval pastel-pink single flowers above the foliage on a sturdy stem. This plant tolerates warmer climates and grows in Zones 3-8.
'Prince Claus'
This Darwin hybrid grows to 600mm (24 in) tall and produces carmine-red flowers that are yellow at the base. They are held above the foliage on a sturdy stem and grow in Zones 3-7.
