Cultivars
'Araucarioides'
This large shrub to small tree is upright with spreading whip-like branches that have terminal whorls of branchlets. It forms an irregular rounded habit and the long overlapping needle-like leaves are dark green.
This plant is very simular to the cultivar 'Viminalis'.
'Compressa'
This slow growing dwarf conifer forms a rounded compact habit with reddish tinged foliage.
'Elegans'
This small tree forms a dense columnar habit that becomes broad with age. It has long bright green leaves that turn red purple during autumn. It is quick growing when young and tolerates a light prune.
'Globosa'
This slow growing shrub formes a bun habit attaining a hight of 400mm (15in) in ten years. It is normally twice as wide as high with closely packed small leaves that turn a rusty red colour during winter.
'Jindai-Sugi'
This slow growing shrub to 2m (6ft) has spreading branches that form an open broad conical rounded habit. The foliage is dark green and the plant is suitable for temperate gardens as a specimen.
'Monstrosa'
This shrub grows to 3m (10ft) tall with a compact rounded habit. The needle-like foliage is congested towards the end of the branches and is dark greed turning bronze in winter. It is suitable for a screen along borders or used as a law specimen and will tolerate USDA zone 6.
'Nana' Dwarf Japanese Cedar
This compact dwarf conifer is covered in adult foliage and forms a rounded bun habit. It can grow 1.5m (5ft) x 3m (10ft). This is an excellent container plant.
'Sekkan-sugi'
This vigorous small tree grows to 7m (21ft) tall forming a conical habit. It has yellow-green pendant-like new growth that matures to green. It is planted along borders as a screen in cooler climates.
'Spiraliter Falcata'
This upright conical tree has foliage that spirals along the branchlets giving the branchlets a twisted appearance.
'Tenzan-sugi'
This dwarf cultivar has dark green foliage on short stems and forms a compact mounded habit. It is commonly cultivated in rockeries or as a container plant in a sunny to semi-shaded open position, tolerating zones 5-7.
