The tree tolerates frost and light drought and is suitable for coastal positions with saline winds. It prefers an open sunny position, and grows on most well drained sandy to clay loams that are moderately fertile. It is planted in formal gardens or along borders for screening and may be pruned for topiary.

This conifer forms a pyramidal habit with blue- green juvenile foliage turning green with age. In 8 to 10 years it will reach 2.5m (8ft) tall by 1m (3ft).
