Cultivars
'Florida'
This shrub is upright forming a dense twiggy rounded habit up to 1m (3ft) tall by 1.5m (5ft) wide with dark glossy green leaves to 100mm (4in) long. It produces sweetly perfumed fully double flowers that are white turning yellow brown with age to 70mm (2µin)wide. It is an excellent plant for low border planting in a small garden tolerating a shaded position.
'Grandiflora' (syn. G. augusta'Magnifica')
This is the larger of the cultivars grows to 2m (6ft) tall by 2.5m (8ft) wide forming a dense rounded shrub. The leaves are larger up to 120mm (4µin) long by 40mm (1½in) wide and the semi-double strongly scented rose-like flowers are less prolific, appearing during spring. It is planted in shrub borders or as a specimen in parks and gardens.
'Grandiflora Star'
This compact cultivar was produced in Japan and has flattish rotate flowers that are white turning cream blooming during spring. It prefers a semi shade moist position and is frost hardy.
'Radicans' Rock Gardenia
This shrub has a prostrate habit with horizontal branching, 500mm (20in) tall and to 2m (6ft) wide. The branches may form roots where they touch the soil and the glossy dark green leaves are a narrow elliptical 40mm (1½in) long and 10mm (?in) wide.
The semi double white scented flowers have petals that are rolled or twisted to 50mm (2in) wide and appear above the foliage during late spring. It grows in a full sun to semi shaded protected position on well drained humus rich moist soil and is used in rock gardens, containers and as a ground cover.
