Grapevine and Virginia Family
This dicotyledon family consists or 12 genera that are mainly woody lianas with leaf opposite tendrils sometimes ending in discoid suckers and are rarely shrubs or small trees.
Distribution
This family of plants is mainly found in subtropical, tropical and warm temperate regions in both the northern and southern hemispheres.
Diagnostic Features
The leavesare simple or compound with stipules and arranged alternately with lobed or coarsely dentate margins rarely entire.
The small actinomorphic flowersare bisexual or rarely unisexual and are arranged racemes or compound-cymose opposite the leaves or terminally. There are 3-5 connate sepals that form a tube and the (3); 4 to 5 free petals are valvate and commonly deciduous.
There are 3-5 small stamens that are arranged oppositely the petals. The ovary is superiorwith 2 -carpels and containing 2-locules with 2-ovules per locule. The simple style has a tiny stigma.
The fruitis a berry containing 1 to 4 seeds.
