Propagation
Stratify seeds for 2 to 3 months during winter in moist peat and sow seeds in pots then place them in a cold frame to germinate.
Botanic information
Leaf: The thin leathery textured dark green variable leaves are ovate-lanceolate to elliptical lanceolate and are up to 80 mm (3? in) along by 40 mm (1? in) wide. The base is cuneate to round with a petiole up to 10 mm (? in) long and margins are entire or with a few serrations and the apex is acute to accumulate.
Flower: The greenish flowers are unisexual. The male (staminate) flowers are arranged in a cluster at the base of the twigs and the small solitary (pistillate) female flowers appear in the leaf axils with the new growth during late spring and pollinated by bees.
Fruit: The orbicular drupe is up to 8 mm (? in) in diameter and appear in the leaf axils on a pendulous pedicle and are orange-brown to red when mature. The small berry-like fruit are edible either raw or cooked but have a dry texture and are dispersed by birds.
