Propagation
Sow fresh seeds in flats during spring and maintain a temperature of 18º to 21º C. (64º to 75º F).
Divide the offsets with roots attached from late spring to early summer.

Botanic information

Leaf: The leathery fleshy grey green broad lanceolate leaves are up to 150mm (6in) wide and taper to an acuminate apex and the base clasps the stem. The margins are armed with reddish brown pungent spines and the leaves are arranged in an apical rosette.

Flower: The slightly club-shaped (calvate) tubulate flowers appear in 3-distinct colour forms, red, yellow and bi-colours. They have a short pedicle that is hidden by leafy bracts and are arranged in a terminal conical raceme that is up to 400mm (16 in) long. There are up to 8-racemes arranged in a slender branched panicle that is held above the foliage up to 1.75 m (5 ft) tall and appear during winter.

Fruit: The small loculicidal capsule is up to 12mm (½ in) wide and contains numerous small grey seeds that are up to 5mm (? in) wide. The small seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
