Botanic information
Leaf: The fleshy textured leathery bluish-gray green ovate to broad lanceolate leaves are up to 80mm (3? in) wide with an acuminate apex with a pungent spine. The undulate to crenate margins are armed with prickly brown down-curved spines, 15mm (? in) apart and the leaves arch outwards from a compact rosette.
Flower: The small bright yellow cyathiform flowers have 5-tepals and strongly exserted greenish stamens. The pedicle is short and the flowers are arranged in a large rounded branched cluster. The clusters appear in a panicle above the foliage on a thick purplish scape that is up to 2.3 to 3.5m (11 ft) tall from early to late summer. This plant is monocarpic (dies after flowering).
Fruit: The oblong slightly dehiscent leathery capsule is up to 17mm (? in) wide with a rounded apex and contains obovate winged seeds that are 5-7mm (¥ in) long by 4-5mm (? in ) wide. The small dark seeds are viable but the plant is commonly propagated vegetatively.
