Propagation
Sow in spring and maintain a temperature of 19º to 27º C. (66º to 81º F).
Semi-hardwood tip cuttings taken during summer apply bottom heat.
Note:
The timber (citron wood) is commonly used for cabinet work and the resin is used to make varnish. This tree is also the national tree of Malta where there are only about 100 specimens left and it is used in reforestation programs.
Botanic information
Leaf: The bright green imbricate scale leaves are triangular in cross-section with a stomatic band on the upper surface and are pressed along the stems in opposite pairs and appear in open sprays.
Flower: The male strobili sheds pollen during spring and the globose erect terminal female cone have 4-scales. They are found in the upper parts of the tree towards the end of the branchlets.
Fruit: The cones have 4-thick scales that are arranged in 2-opposite pairs and mature in 8-months. The small seeds are up to 7mm (¥ in) long and have a papery wing on each side that are up to 4mm (? in) wide. The small seeds are viable but the plant can be reproduced vegetatively.
