Propagation
Stratify the seeds for three months and maintain a temperature of 5º C (41º F) for 3-months prior to sowing in a prepared bed and keep moist.
Take semi hardwood cuttings taken in during autumn.
Divide established clumps during spring.
Botanic information
Leaf: The dull green imparipinnate leaves have 3 to 5-leathery textured sessile ovate-oblong leaflets that have 4-6 spiny teeth along the undulating margins and are up to 50 mm (2 in) long with an pungent apex. The texture is stiff and leathery and the underside is greyish. During autumn the leaves turn red-purple. The terminal bud is ovoid with 6 scales and the laterals are small.
Flower: The small yellow cyathiform flowers are up to 15 mm (? in) wide and are arranged in a terminal or axillary fascicled raceme that is up to 50mm (2 in) long. They appear above the foliage during spring.
Fruit: The fleshy purple-black spherical berries are up to 10 mm (? in) in diameter and have a grape-like appearance. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively. The fruit is edible but has a sour taste.
