Botanic information
Leaf: The soft textured densely pubescent silvery green sessile lanceolate leaves are up to 150 mm (6 in) long with an accumulate apex. They are arranged spirally towards the end of the branchlets.

Flower: The tiny tubulate flowers are arranged in a terminal head that is up to 40mm (1? in) wide and surrounded by spreading silvery leaf-like bracts. The small ovoid female cone-shaped flower head is greenish-silver, 90 mm (3½ in) x 60 mm (2? in) and the male is yellowish-green, both are surrounded by silvery-green leafy bracts. They appear from late spring to early summer on different trees (Dioecious).

Note:
The male trees flower more prolifically with an involucre of bright silvery leaf-like bracts with a bright yellow ball-like flower head and fall from the tree once flowering is completed. The smaller female flower heads appear higher in the tree and it may be difficult to see but they persist on the tree the several years and become enlarged while producing seeds.

Fruit: The small nuts are contained in an enlarged female cone-like flower head that is up to 90 mm (3½ in) long by 60 mm (2? in) wide and is densely covered in silvery hairs. It takes several months after flowering to produce the seed which is released during hot and dry weather or after fire.
