Propagation
Sow seeds when ripe in containers and place in a cold frame. Germination normally occurs during spring. Prick out when larger to handle and pot on for one season.
Division of the rhizome for beardless species during spring, when the new growth begins.

Note:
All parts of the plant if ingested will cause severe stomach upset.

Botanic information
Leaf: The dark green linear leaves up to 20 mm (µ in) wide with an acute apex and pinkish or reddish at the base. The upper surface is conspicuously nerved and the leaves tend to arch.

Flower: The flattish crateriform flowers have a perianth tube that is up to 25 mm (1 in)long with red-purple, lilac, white or cream lanceolate segments (petals) with darker veins. The oblanceolate to obovate falls (sepals) are up to 88 mm (3½ in) long.There are 2 to 3 flowers arranged on a branched stem up to 800 mm (31 in) tall above the foliage and appear from mid-spring to early summer.

Fruit: The small 3 to 6 angular leathery capsule contains numerous pitted seeds that are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
