Propagation
Sow fresh seed when ripe and place in an open frame to germinate.
Take soft tip cuttings of non-flowering shoots during late spring and semi hardwood cuttings taken during late summer.
Division of suckers during spring or by layering.
Botanic information
Leaf: The glossy pale to dark green leaves are ovate to oblong-lanceolate up to 60 mm (2?in) wide with an acute apex and a short petiole. The dull mid-green underside is slightly pubescent with prominent veins and when crushed it has a light fragrance.
Flower: The reddish-brown bisexual campanulate flowers have linear to spathulate sepals and petals up to 60 mm (2?in) long and spiral towards the mouth with many stamens. The flowers are arranged terminally or on bracted branches appearing from spring to summer.
Fruit: The capsule-like receptacle contains many brown, single-seeded achenes, which persist on the plant throughout winter. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
The flower contains calycanthine which is an alkaloid is similar to strychnine and is toxic if ingested causing stomach upset and or vomiting to humans and livestock.
