Propagation
Sow fresh seed during winter in well-drained containers and place on a cold frame until germination occurs.
Division of offsets during the dormant period.
Culture
When planting the bulbs bury at 100-150mm (6in) deep in the soil during autumn. If grown in containers under glass use a loam-based very well drained media and a water regularly during the growing period and reduce water during the dormant period in late summer to early autumn.
Botanic information
Leaf: The lower leaves linear to narrow lanceolate up to 200 mm (8in) long and reduced in size as they appear further up the stem. They clasp the stem at the base and have a long acuminate apex.
Flower: The campanulate flowers have 3-sepals that are up to 30 mm (1?in) long and 3-broad petals up to 40 mm (1?in) long by 50mm (2in) wide, reflexed and beaded at the apex. They are bright yellow and are marked on the inside with red-brown lines that are accompanied by slender yellow matted hairs. It has pubescent crescent-shaped non-depressed nectaries at the base of each petal and the 6-yellow stamens are erect.
There are 1-7 flowers arranged in a sub-umbellate inflorescence and are accompanied by bracts that are 10-80mm (3?in) long. The flowers are held above the ground on a slender scape and appear during spring.
Note
The flower petals opened wide during a bright daylight and then close as evening approaches.
Fruit: The 3-angled narrow lanceolate capsule is erect and contains numerous small seeds in 2-rows in each chamber. The seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
