Botanic information
Leaf: The long linear leaves are basal and cauline with a scabrous or smooth sheath at the base. The ligule is membranous and the flat leaf may have recurved margins.

Flower: The spikelet consists of lanceolate glumes that are acute to acuminate. They are arranged in a weeping to nodding purplish panicle-like inflorescence that appears above the foliage on a slender arching scape that is up to 1 m (3ft) tall during mid-spring.

Fruit: The grain-like achene is very small and the seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively. Allow seed heads to dry on the plant before harvesting.
