Propagation
Sow fresh seed when ripe in containers and place in a cold frame or sow in a prepared bed. Seeds may require some stratification.
Note:
Under cultivation the tree grows smaller, attaining a height of only 30 m (100 ft).
Botanic information
Leaf: The brownish conical winter buds have resinous scales and open to slightly curved and flattened linear leaves with 4-7 somatic bands on both sides. The apex is acute to obtuse and the leaves are arranged spirally and forward pointing on the upper side of the yellowish-green branchlets.
Flower: The staminate (male) pale brown pollen cones are upright to nodding and the greenish woody pistillate (female) cones are upright and are deep purplish maturing in to brown.The monoecious flowers are pollinated by wind during mid-spring.
Fruit: The reddish brown or purple oblong cones mature to rich brown and are up to 35 mm (1? in)wide. It has rhombic-ovate scales that are 25 mm (1 in) by 17 mm (? in)with an obtuse to triangular apex and each scale has two greyish brown winged seeds that are 12 mm (½ in) wide.
