Propagation
Sow fresh seeds in containers and place in a cold frame to germinate.

Division of the clump during early spring.

Note:
The fruit is poisonous and if ingested it may be lethal.


Botanic information
Leaf: The 3-ternate pinnate leaves with ovate leaflets that is deeply incised and sharply serrated along margins. The dark green upper surface is textured with embossed veins and petiole is long and slender. The leaves tend to appear towards the top of the slender greenish-grey stems. During autumn leaves turn pale yellow-bronze before falling and are a feature of the plant.

Flower: The small white crateriform flowers have 4-5 petal-like sepals that are shed early and 4-10 small flat spathulate petal-like staminodes with a truncated apex. The numerous whitish stamens are long and exserted with yellowish anthers. There are many flowers arranged in a terminal spherical-ovoid raceme that appears from mid-spring to early summer.

Fruit: The glossy red or white ellipsoid berries have green to brown slender pedestal and are arranged in an upright raceme. They contain black seeds that are up to 4 mm (? in) in diameter. The small seeds are viable but the plant may be reproduced vegetatively.
Note. The white berry has a black spot (pupil-like) at one end but is rarely seen and are known as Actaea rubraforma neglecta.
