Propagation
Stratify fresh seeds for 2 to 3 months at 5º C (41ºF) then sow in spring and maintain a temperature of 19º to 27º C. (66º to 81º F). Seeds may be sown directly into the ground or in containers.
Greenwood cuttings taken during early summer and dipped into hormone powder, then placed in a well-drained media.
Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are obovate to broad-obovate, up to 45 mm (1µ in) wide with an acuminate apex and a sharply double serrated margin. The upper surface is dark green and the underside is pale green with a petiole up to 15 mm (? in)long. During autumn the leaves turn orange-red before falling.
Flower: The crateriform flowers have a glabrous calyx tube that is up to 6 mm (¥ in)long with 5-spreading obovate petals up to 12 mm (½ in)long. There are 1-3 flowers arranged in a sessile umbel or an umbel-like corymb on a short peduncle and appear from late spring to early summer and are followed by the persistent reddish calyx.
Fruit: The small globose drupe is purplish black and contains numerous seeds that are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
