Propagation
Sow fresh seed during autumn in pots and place in a cold frame to germinate and maintain a temperature of 16º to 18º C.

Division of the clump in autumn.
Rhizome cuttings taken during winter and placed under glass. Plant out after danger of frost.

Botanic information
Leaf: The dull green basal leaves have 1-3 leaflets with a petiole up to 130 mm (5? in) long and the flowering stem leaves are a opposite pair of trifoliate leaves that are up to 120 mm (4µ in) wide with a petiole is up to 50 mm (2 in) long. The 3-almost glabrous leaflets are ovate to narrow-ovate up to 60 mm (2? in) long by 30 mm (1? in) wide with an acute apex and a slightly cordate base. The upper surface is puckered and the margins are spinulose-subserrulate.

Flower: The white crateriform flowers are up to 25 mm (1 in) wide with caducous outer sepals up to 4 mm (? in) long and the spreading white lanceolate inner sepals (petaloids) have an acuminate apex and are up to 20 mm (µ in) long by 9 mm (? in) wide. The 4-white petals form a lipped pouch with projecting slightly curved spurs and 4-stamens. There are 3-12 flowers arranged in a lax raceme that is held above the foliage on a slender scape and appear from mid to late spring.

Fruit: The small elongated green to brown capsule produces tiny seeds that are viable but the plant is normally reproduced vegetatively to maintain true to type.
