Propagation
Stratified seeds for 3-months at 5º C (41ºF) in a moist media and place in a cold frame. Prick out when large to handle into pots and plant out the following year. (Protected during first winter as the seedlings are slow to grow)
Transplanted from balled and burlapped.
Softwood cuttings taken during early summer and place in a protected environment until roots appear. (Cuttings may be difficult to strike)
Botanic information
Leaf: The variable leaves are ovate to elliptical ovate up to 60 mm (2? in) wide and have 6-10 pairs of lateral veins on the glabrous upper surface. It has a cuneate base with a petiole of the 30 mm (1? in)long and has biserrate or lobed margins with a shortly acuminate apex. The lustrous dark green leaves turn yellow to orange-red during autumn before falling.
Note
The ovoid buds are up to 7 mm (¥ in) long with an acute apex and have several dark reddish-brown scales.
Flower: The showy campanulate flowers have triangular to ovate sepals with an acute apex and oblong-ovate white petals that are up to 7 mm (¥ in) long with an obtuse apex and contains 20-stamens. They are arranged in a terminal compound corymb up to 80 mm (3? in)in diameter and appear during late spring.
Fruit: The oblong to ovoid oblong fleshy pome is up to 10 mm (? in) wide and varies in colour from pinkish red to orange red or scarlet and may have a few minute dark lenticels. It contains linear oblong brownish orange seeds and with fruit is persistent on the plant after the leaves have fallen. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
Culture
The flowers and fruits may appear profusely one year and less the following year and pruning should be carried out during the cooler months to avoid infection from fireblight which has a devastating effect on the tree.
