Propagation
Stratify seeds or five months in a warm temperature and then stratify for three months in a cool temperature. Germination may take up to 18 months.
Take semi-hardwood cuttings during summer and a place under the mist and leave for one season after roots appear before potting up.
Botanic information
Leaf: The mid to dark green leaves are oval to obovate-oblong and up to 65 mm (2½)wide. The upper part of the undulating leaf margins are dentate to crenate with an obtuse apex and the petiole is up to 38 mm (1½ in) long. During autumn leaves turn rich purple to brilliant red before falling.
Flower: The small apetalous bisexual flowers have exerted showy crimson stamens and 5-7 lobed sepals. They are arranged in a dense cluster that is up to 12 mm (½ in) wide and are surrounded by large white pubescent bracts. They appear in the leaf axils before the foliage from late winter to early spring and are commonly overlooked but are an interesting feature of the plant.
Fruit: The bright brown capsule has 2-valves with a single seed per cell. The seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
