Botanic information
Leaf: The leaves are oval to elliptical oblong with an obtuse apex and a slightly cordate base with a short petiole up to 6mm (¥ in) long. The upper surface is dark green and blue green underside is a densely pubescent.

Flower: The flowers are campanulate to salverform with 5-toothed calyx lobes and 5-pink or white corolla lobes that are pubescent on the inside. They are arranged in a terminal spike that is up to 45mm (1µ in) long and appearduring late spring on the current season's growth.

Fruit: The berry-like white drupe is globose and appears in clusters at the end of the branches and contains 2-oblong seeds. The fruit soon discolours to brown after ripening and is persisted on the plant to midwinter.

This fruit contains saponins which is toxic if ingested, although the body absorbs little and is generally passed through without causing harm. The small seeds are viable but the plant is commonly reproduced vegetatively.
