Propagation
Sow fresh seed during spring in flat and prick out when large enough to handle.
Semi hardwood cuttings taken during summer and placed in a protected environment until roots appear, keep moist.
Botanic information
Leaf: The soft textured very pubescent leaves are lanceolate to narrow ovate with a crenate-serrate to entire margin. The upper surface has a quilted-like mint appearance and the underside is pale green. The petiole is short and the apex is acute.
Flower: The 2-lipped campanulate flowers have a green 5-lobed pubescent calyx with a reddish veins and a short pedestal. The corolla is up to 30 mm (1? in) long, inflated at the base with a 5-lobed upper lip and the exserted pale pink lower lip is fringed.
There are 2-6 drooping flowers arranged in an axillary raceme that appear from spring to summer and the flowers are pollinated by bumble bees and attract humming birds.
Fruit: Woodbalm is grown for its low bushy habit and the flowers. It is planted in small or fragrant gardens along borders or used in patio pots and planter boxes. It is suitable for coastal and adjoining low land regions establishing in 1-2 years that may be short lived. This plant is also used in commercial landscapes or water wise gardens requiring little maintenance once established.
