Propagation
Sow fresh seeds in situ in pairs 25 mm (1 in) deep in a prepared raise garden bed, then thin out after germination.
The seeds germinate at temperatures of 70 to 90°F and take 2-weeks to emerge then should be hardened off for one week then planted out after the last frost in a well-drained prepared bed with a soil temperature between 20º to 30º C. (68º to 86º F).
Botanic information
Leaf: The variable dark green broad-ovate to reniform leaves are up to 300 mm (1 ft) or more long by 250 mm (9µ in) wide and have an obtuse apex. The margins may be lobed, undulating or serrated and the cordate base has a thick pubescent petiole is up to 70 mm (2? in) long. The upper surface is dull green with a quilted-like appearance and the pale green pubescent underside has prominent venation. They are arranged alternately along the fleshy pubescent green stems.
Flower: The plant is monoecious with male and female flowers. The bright yellow rotate to funnelform flowers are up to 25 mm (1 in) or more wide with 5-broad-ovate deeply veined petals. The male flowers have 3-seperate stamens and the female flowers have an inferior ovary. They appear solitary or in a small cluster on spurs in the leaf axils during summer.
Note:
The male flowers are rarely solitary and normally appear in a small cluster and that the female flowers are normally solitary.
Fruit: The very variable globose to oblong fleshy fruit varies in colour and texture. They have a thin or thick outer layer and the inside is fleshy and contains numerous horizontal seeds. The Rockmelon / Cantaloupe fruit is up to 150 mm (6 in) or more in diameter and has a musky aroma.
